Homemade Cold Remedies

Is fighting a cold a losing battle?  Is it really just a matter of time?  You could take some over the counter medication to speed things up but then there’s usually that one dose that makes you feel like you live in a fishbowl. The internet is filled with all sorts of homemade remedies.   We’ve done some research to find out what works and what’s a waste.  Here’s how you win with Homemade Cold Remedies that actually work.

Today Show:

Honey

 It works! Tea with honey or warm lemon water mixed with honey is actually useful in alleviating coughing in children and can help relieve a sore throat in adults.

In one study, children age 2 and older with upper respiratory tract infections were given up to 2 teaspoons (10 milliliters) of honey at bedtime, according to the Mayo Clinic. With the honey, night coughing was reduced and sleep was easier.

In fact, in the study, honey appeared to be as effective as a common cough suppressant ingredient, dextromethorphan, in typical over-the-counter doses.

Good news and it tastes so much better than cough syrup.   Throwing some in hot tea actually combines two strategies.

Hot Liquids

Hot liquids have long been promised to help loosen secretions in the chest and sinuses, making them easier to expel and ultimately clearing up congestion.

Not pleasant to talk about but good to know.  Here’s the bonus: it’s not just tea that works, it’s chicken soup too.

Salt Water

Rinsing with salt water helps break nasal congestion and rinse out the sinuses.

Sounds great, the only catch is using things like Netti Pots and syringes and making sure they are sterile.  We’re not talking about gargling with salt water here, it’s a little more complex.   And, you need to be extremely careful about the water you use.

Mayo Clinic

The Mayo Clinic has a couple of more to add:

Add moisture to the air.

A cool mist vaporizer or humidifier can add moisture to your home, which might help loosen congestion. Change the water daily, and clean the unit according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Don’t use steam, which hasn’t been shown to help and may cause burns.

Rest.

Your body needs to heal.  That one is so simple, it’s easy to forget.  We call it “fighting a cold”, and we think we need to push through it.  Perhaps the best and even faster way, is to take it lying down!
